Welcome to our walk through the Potsdamer Platz quarter – the Platz to be, as it is also called. It doesn’t matter whether you are just visiting the city or live here and have been to Potsdamer Platz many times – you will be amazed at what exciting stories can be told about this fascinating place.
Potsdamer Platz was and still is a legend. Since its spectacular reconstruction during the 1990’s, it has become a fantastic meeting place in the heart of Berlin. The development of Potsdamer Platz began over 200 years ago. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, people would come here on day trips and craftsmen had modest workshops. Later on, during the 1920’s, Berliners and visitors to the city met here to while away the hours in spectacular entertainment venues.
After the war ended in 1945, a thriving black market developed between the ruins. One could buy almost anything there, from American cigarettes to a new passport. When the Berlin Wall was built in 1961 and the division between East and West Berlin was literally made concrete, Potsdamer Platz became a dead end and turned into a large wasteland.
Nowadays, the Potsdamer Platz quarter is once again the Platz to be. It is a popular meeting place for Berliners and visitors from all over the world. The huge choice of restaurants, shops, theatres, cinemas, cultural and art institutes offers countless entertainment options and ensures that something is always going on around the clock.
